The next new cellular network, 5G technology, is knocking on the door. While all the major cellular companies are already on board, consumers aren’t so sure. With reports of the new technology potentially leading to negative health effects, people have reason to worry.
Furthermore, many believe that the new cellular network may even pose threats to the environment and our communities. But, are these reports true? Or, is the 5G cell phone network upgrade something consumers shouldn’t fear?
What is 5G Technology?
Essentially, 5G is the next biggest break in cellular technology. Specifically, it’s the 5th generation of cellular networks. Each of the networks before has brought about new capabilities and faster speeds to cell phones everywhere. However, the 5G network is the most advanced.
All in all, the new network will deliver even more robust internet speeds, better cellular responsiveness, and more connection versatility. Thus, allowing us to communicate better with one another using our advanced technological devices than ever before.
The Dangers of 5G
People fear the introduction of 5G technology will affect our society, our health, and even our environment in various ways. However, others believe that this fear resembles some of the fear-mongering technological debates of the past (can you say “Y2K?”).
But, in any case, there’s no stopping the launch of this new tech. So, it’s up to each consumer to determine whether or not these dangers truly pose a threat.
Health Risks of 5G
People have been wary of radiation brought about by phones, TVs, and microwaves for years. The fear that the introduction of new technology heightens our risk for cancer or other radiation-like issues isn’t new. And, the introduction of the 5G network is no exception.
For example, one study using mice found that over-exposure to cellular radiation brought about brain tumours, heart tumours, and DNA damage. Thus, strengthening the side of the argument that an even faster, stronger network may bring about the same health issues in humans.
However, other studies argue that cellular radiation isn’t as toxic as other types of radiation. For example, the same type of radiation that 5G capable phones may give off mirrors the same amount of radiation a standard AM/FM radio does. Or, non-ionizing levels of radiation.
But, on the other hand, an x-ray machine gives off ionizing levels of radiation. Therefore, creating a higher risk of radiation health effects.
Environmental Effects of the 5G Network
Along with the potential health effects of the 5G cellular network, some people fear negative effects on the environment. They fear that even low-frequency levels of radiation can lead to catastrophes such as the destruction of plants. And, the contamination of many of our food sources.
Furthermore, some believe that the use of more cellular network satellites, which 5G technology will require, may cause atmospheric threats.
Essentially, the carbon emitted by these machines will be enough to negatively impact the ozone layer. Finally, other reports find that even low-ionizing levels of radiation can hurt the health of both bird and bee species.
On the other end of the spectrum, others argue that the 5G cellular network’s higher speed isn’t an issue. And, that these higher speeds even bring about lower non-ionizing levels of radiation. And, that non-ionizing levels of radiation never have been nor ever will be harmful enough to worry about.
