What Are the Different Types of Spyware?

Spyware is any malicious software that helps a bad actor snoop on you. It’s been around for decades, allowing cybercriminals to breach data security, commit blackmail, identity theft, financial crimes, and much more.

Interestingly, employers, parents, and marketers also use some spyware brands to keep tabs on their targets. With so many different types of spyware on the Internet and in our homes and offices, it’s a good idea to take a deeper look at this tool.

1. Adware

Adware is a kind of malware that bombards your screen with advertising popups to help marketers generate revenue. However, a few experts also categorize some types of adware as spyware because it snoops on your Internet activity.

2. Software Keyloggers

Software keyloggers are apps for your mobile phone or computer that log your keystrokes. While keyloggers may seem harmless, consider that they can also capture your usernames, passwords, documents, and the content of your emails. More advanced brands of keyloggers can also grab screenshots.

3. Hardware Keyloggers

Hardware keyloggers perform the same function as the software variety, i.e. log your keystrokes. However, a bad actor must physically install such keyloggers on your computer. This spyware comes in the shape of computer peripherals like thumb drives, keyboards, or components that attach to your keyboard.

Not only do online criminals and state-sponsored agents use these devices, but so do parents who want to keep an eye on their kids. Likewise, many companies use hardware keyloggers to protect their data from corporate espionage and other cybersecurity breaches.

4. Military Grade Spyware

Not surprisingly, companies with connections to world governments develop the most advanced spyware. For example, NSO Group, founded by ex-members of the Israeli Intelligence Corps unit, developed an advanced spyware called Pegasus that can read text messages, eavesdrop on phone calls, and steal passwords.

It can also snoop on a person through their device’s microphone and camera. Advanced spyware like Pegasus often exploits hardware vulnerabilities. You should download the newest security patches for your device to stop spyware that uses exploits.

5. Stalkerware

Stalkerware is a type of spyware that abusers use to spy on vulnerable people like women and children. It can steal passwords, messages, social media content and give a user the exact location of their target.

Unfortunately, stalkerware can also lead to domestic violence. Often, developers brand stalkerware as security software or a seemingly innocent app for mobile devices to hide its nefarious functions.

6. Spyware Trojans

Trojan horse malware is any malicious software that uses deception to evade detection. Some Trojans like Infostealer Trojans, Trojan bankers, Password Trojans, and Game-thief Trojansdirectly attack your passwords and other sensitive information. Spyware Trojans are usually part of software bundles, freeware, or pirated games.

How do I prevent spyware attacks?

Download and run spyware removal and detection software regularly to prevent spyware, stalkerware, keyloggers, and Trojans from stealing your data.

And as mentioned above, check for security updates often to plug flaws in your computer or mobile device’s operating system. Finally, don’t use unsecured public WiFi connections or open suspicious emails that hackers can use as spyware attack vectors.
