What is WPS? Advantages and Disadvantages of WPS?

WPS is a new bright spot in today’s connectivity technology. You will not need to use traditional methods to make wi-fi connections anymore, instead using WPS makes the job much simpler. So what is WPS?

What is WPS?

WPS stands for wi-fi-protected setup, which is a new Technology standard for establishing and installing safe and easy-to-use wireless networks. If compared with the previous technology, WPS brings a lot of convenience to users.

WPS supports Wi-Fi connection between devices, such as 802.11 access point devices, wireless adapters, wi-fi phones, and other electronic devices.

When you turn on WPS, you no longer need to enter your username or password. By using WPS in the modem and WPS already supported on the device, it is now easy to connect.

How to use WPS

Using WPS is very easy, you can follow two login methods or authentication as follows

1) Pin method

From the web configuration using WPS, a random login PIN appears. This PIN is used to log in the user’s AP or device connected to WPS. In case you want to connect to WPS, all you have to do is log in to the pin.

2) PBC method

The device has a WPS button. Users just need to click on it, this button is already integrated on the devices, now both WPS devices are connected.

Advantages and Disadvantages of WPS

Advantages of WPS

  1. WPS makes it easy to connect devices to a Wi-Fi network, especially for non-technical users.
  2. Devices can connect to the network with just the press of a button or entry of a PIN, reducing the time for configuration.
  3. Users do not need to remember or enter long, complicated Wi-Fi passwords.
  4. Most new routers and devices support WPS, making it widely applicable.

WPS is now integrated and supported on Windows Vista. If you are still wondering whether traditional methods still effective on WPS? Absolutely yes, you can use these two methods in parallel without causing any other effect.

Disadvantages of WPS

  • WPS has several vulnerabilities, making networks more susceptible to attacks. The PIN-based method, in particular, is prone to brute force attacks.
  • Not all devices support WPS, and some new devices may have phased out support due to security concerns.
  • Push button require physical access to the router, which can be inconvenient if the router is in an inaccessible location.
  • If the WPS button is pressed inadvertently or intentionally by unauthorized users, it could allow them to connect to the network.

How to Set up WPS on Devices

1) For phones

To establish a WPS connection for your phone, follow these steps:

  • Turn on WPS on the modem, if it emits light, it indicates that the modem is ready to connect.
  • Select the app button on your mobile and proceed to set.
  • In the settings, select wifi and continue to find the option.
  • Then, click the option, choose WPS Push, wait a few minutes to connect.
  • After the process is complete please confirm and select ok.

2) For Television

To establish a WPS wifi connection for the TV, you need to follow these steps:

  • Turn on the WPS button on the modem, if there is a light indicating that WPS is ready for operation.
  • Press the home button on the screen via the remote.
  • Select the settings.
  • Next select network.
  • Depending on the device at this time, you can choose network setup or setup network connection.
  • You continue to choose Wireless or wireless LAN or Wifi.
